Heywood, Leland 1892, Biography, History of Arizona, 1930

Leland Heywood, D.D.S

One of the most prominent professional men in Holbrook is Dr. Leland Heywood, who commands a large and steadily growing dental practice and is greatly esteemed by all who know him.  He was born in Alpine, Apache County,
Arizona, on the 17th day of April, 1892, and is one of eleven children who blessed the union of Joseph Neal and Sarah Franceal (sic.) (Coleman) Heywood, the former of whom was a rancher and teacher.  Dr. Heywood received his early education in the public schools of this state, after which he attended in succession the University of Arizona, the University of Utah, and the University of South Carolina (sic.) [California].  From the latter institution he ways graduated, with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, in 1928.  He spent a short time in Los Angeles and then came to Holbrook, where he has a nicely furnished and well equipped office.  He has won a reputation as a careful and painstaking dentist, the quality of whose work has been his best advertisement, and has made many friends since locating here.

On August 18, 1921, Dr. Heywood was united in marriage to Miss Margaret E. Smurtwait (sic.) [Smurthwaite], of Salt Lake City, Utah, and they are the parents of two children.  Margaret Josephine and Barbara Lee (sic.) [Lea].  He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi college fraternity, University of Southern California, and his religious faith is that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  He loves outdoor life and hunting and fishing are his favorite forms of recreation.  He is genial and affable in manner and he and his wife are extremely popular in the social circles in which they move.

Some Notes and Memories, Richard N. Heywood

Leland lived in Alpine until he was 8 years old.  Imagine what it was like to be boy in a tiny pioneer home.  It was drafty with a leaky roof, a potbelly stove, and a wood burning cook stove and fireplace.  Their yard included cows, horses, chickens, fences, gates, dirt and grass.  In the woods nearby there were turkeys, skunks, quail and other animals and birds of field.  There were few neighbors and few friends.
Leland was the middle child and was bossed and dominated by the older siblings, Neal, Spence, and Ella.
There were tragedies in his family:  Three of his sisters died in their childhood.  An uncle, Willard Coleman, was struck by lightening and killed when Leland was 5.
Leland had typhoid fever at age 6.
His father was a farmer and a teacher.  He served a mission in New Zealand before Leland was born.
His mother was also a teacher.
Leland taught school for a short time in Thatcher before his mission.
Leland saved money to go to school when his mission call came.  It was a surprise.  He carried the call in his pocket "for a week" before deciding to go to Hawaii on his mission.
After his mission, he visited his brother Dave and Sister Velma in Logan where he met Margaret Smurthwaite. He proposed in the kitchen with dirty dishes on the able.
When his mother learned about his serious interest in Margaret, she immediately came for a visit.  She and her sister, Etta, were liked by Margaret's father because of their "wit," not their sophistication.
While riding home from Smithfield to Logan on the Bamberger Line, Leland told Margaret about the death of his father.
Margaret's family liked Leland.  Her sister, Mildred, about 13 or 14 years of age, "loved him."  (She had become paralyzed from the waist down following a fall from a tree when she was 12.  She died at age 17 of tubercular meningitis.)
Leland and Margaret honeymooned in Los Angeles.
1921.  They lived in Bingham Canyon where Margaret taught school for 1 year.  Leland worked at Scram Johnson's Pharmacy.  Velma taught there, too, and his mother lived with them at least some of the time.  (I think they all lived together.)
?1921, 1922 Leland and Margaret lived in St. John's, AZ where Margaret was a 6th grade teacher and Leland worked at Anderson Drug Company.
1922 they lived in Mesa.  Leland worked at a drugstore in Chandler.  Daughter, Margaret Josephine (Jo) was born in Mesa.
1924-1928 Leland attended Dental School, Margaret mothered and taught school.  Daughter, Barbara was born in 1928.  Leland graduated.
1928-1935  Practiced dentistry in Holbrook.  Alfred in 1930 and Richard in 1933 were born in Snowflake and were delivered by Leland's brother, Neal.
1935 Moved to Mesa because it was considered a "better place" to raise a family.  Lived on Mesa Drive for about 2 years and then on 1st Street where they reared children including Carol who became part of the family in 1940.
A faithful Rotarian in Holbrook and Mesa for many year.
Various callings in the Church over the years, including his mission in Hawaii, various ward assignments, Maricopa Stake High Council for about 12 years, and Stake Patriarch in Maricopa and Oahu Stake in Hawaii.

Home in Mesa:  About 2 acres on First Street.  Lawns (always!), (often) a vegetable garden, citrus orchard and many other trees (apricot, plumb, pecan, pomegranate), shrubs, fences, one or two  cows, one or two horses, many baby chicks and chickens, ditches, and many memories.  Two lambs at one time.  Cat:  Tonto.  Dogs:  First "Snowball" and the "Oliver."
House:  Three bed rooms.  One bathroom shared by 6 (no lock on the door). One-car garage and small store-room packed with "canned" (bottled) fruit.   A washroom with washing machine and hand driven wringer. Doors were seldom locked.  Dried grapes on the roof to "make" raisins.  Clothesline in the back yard
Leland arose early (about 5:00), worked in the yard, fixed breakfast, awakened the children (often with a bugle call or with  pretend "flies" which were "bad in the morning" or with three warnings, the third being climaxed with the bed clothes being forcefully removed exposing the lazy child,  Breakfast usually included eggs, toast and jam, mush (with what would be called whipping cream today) and the family surrounding the table for prayer.  (He often made unusual "concoctions" made up of eggs, onions, various vegetables, and various meats.)
He walked to work on Main Street about 8:00 and put in a long day.  He would return home very tired (having been "down in the mouth most of the day) and often had a short nap.  Supper followed at 6:00, again with the family around the table where prayer was said.  (Margaret prepared the supper.)  He listened to the news on the radio, read the paper, sometimes played solitaire, and often went to bed as early as 9:00.
A highly respected dentist.  One of his colleagues said he was the best in the town doing a certain type of dental filling.
He was thought to be patient and kind, but his children considered him quite serious and somewhat stern.  His wife said he looked like his was "scowling" when in "repose."   He loved his grandchildren.
He had a finger and part of another amputated because of skin cancer caused by excessive X-ray exposure in his practice of dentistry.
He made a platform for an electric train so it could be kept under the boys' bed.  He made a basketball standard in the back yard for Richard.  He also constructed attractive knotted-pine storage cupboards in the garage when the family home was on Vista Drive (later name 7th Place) in Mesa.
